The Bahamas are one of the top tourist destinations in the Caribbean and Atlantic. While often considered a Caribbean destination the Bahamas aren't technically in the Caribbean. The Bahamas are an archipelago of over 600 islands and cays.

The Bahamas have quite a selection of hotels to choose from, everything from high end luxury resort hotels to small boutique all inclusive resorts. You can probably see a theme here as the massive Atlantis resort dominates Nassau with it's multiple towers and water park. It is one of the most recognized hotels if the most recognized hotel in all of the Caribbean. Atlantis has sectioned off the resort so each tower area is tailored to whatever your budget may be.

The Cove Atlantis is the most luxurious section of the resort, with the Reef a close second. Small Hope Bay Lodge is on Andros Island and is a divers paradise. This small all inclusive resort made it on my top 10 ranking of adults only all inclusive Caribbean resorts.

The One and Only Ocean Club is one of the elite luxury resorts in the Bahamas and the entire Caribbean, in the same league as Sandy Lane in Barbados, Amanyara in Turks and Caicos and Sheriva in Anguilla.

The Dominican Republic is by far the top destination in the Caribbean in terms of sheer numbers. Over 3.8 million people visit the Dominican republic each year, second place Cancun has 1.6 million visitors per year. In 2011 1.1 million people came from the U.S., 1 million from Europe, 580,000 from Canada and 1 million from other various countries.

There are several resort areas in the Dominican Republic such as Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana and the Samana Peninsula. Punta Cana is by far the largest and most well known resort area in the Dominican Republic and is home to some of the finest resorts.

Gran Bahia Principe's Dominican Republic hotels are located in Punta Cana, Samana, Puerto Plata and La Romana. Puerto Plata and La Romana only have one resort each. Well, Tripadvisor has released their 2012 Traveler's Choice Awards, and the top rated all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic is the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado located in Samana. Last years best rated all inclusive resort was the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro which slipped to number 2 this year. Both resorts however made it on my ranking of the top 10 hotels in the Dominican Republic overall.

The Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado is not a mega resort but rather falls more into the mid-boutique category with just 200 rooms. Bahia Principe Hotels are some some of the best all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. The hotel is actually on a small island which only enhances the getting-away-from-it-all experience. This resort is what you dream about when thinking of a tropical island paradise.

Samana is located on the north side of Samana bay which is a popular cruise ship stop and destination for humpback whale watchers in the months of January through March.

The Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado offers luxurious suites to beach front villas with every conceivable service and amenity you could ask for. As with most of the high end luxury boutique all inclusive resorts the real difference is the staff to guest ratio which ensures you receive warm seamless service.

One nice feature of Bahia Principe resorts are their affordability. For such a highly rated resort the rooms are not as expensive as you might think, in fact, the rates are about typical for a Caribbean all inclusive resort. Playa Del Carmen has been rated by Trip Advisor reviews to be one of the top Caribbean vacation destinations, and with their tremendous selection of resorts to choose from it's no wonder. These top 10 are all world class luxury resorts and you really can't go wrong with any of them. Top Rated Luxury Resort in the Caribbean - Sandy Lane

Trip Advisor has published their 2012 Traveler's Choice Awards for the top 25 luxury hotels in the world and only one was in the Caribbean, Sandy Lane.

Sandy Lane is located in Saint James, Barbados and if you have read my rankings of the top 10 luxury resorts in Barbados you would have seen Sandy Lane rated number one.

Since 1961 Sandy Lane has really set the standard for world class luxury resorts in the Caribbean. This is really saying a lot because there are a number of incredible luxury resorts in the Caribbean. A couple that come to mind would be Sheriva and Cap Juluca. Not too many Caribbean hotels can boast that they've hosted British Royalty, which should tell you something.

Incidentally, I know a gentleman who is the pilot for local billionaire Jon Shirley's private jet. He was telling me once how Mr. Shirley was spending the holidays on Barbados and invited my friend and his family to spend the holidays on Barbados as well. He didn't mention the resort but I can only imagine if money was no object, Sandy Lane is probably where I would stay.

The resort was the inspiration of a British politician who while visiting his summer home on Barbados in the 1950's thought the Sandy Lane sugar mill would be a great place to build a resort. The entire resort was rebuilt in 2001 with the latest in luxury and technology. The current owners want Sandy Lane to be the premiere luxury resort in the Caribbean and it appears that they are succeeding.

The current rates for a room for 2 per night at Sandy Lane is $1040.

Well, it's that time of year when the gloom of gray wintery weather is upon those of us in the northern hemisphere, when the idea of escaping to a great beach on a Caribbean island beckons...

My wife and I just received a package in the mail the other day, the sender address didn't seem familiar and we wondered who it could be from. We opened it to find a box of Godiva chocolates sent from the villa rental company that we used last summer for our trip to the Cayman Islands. Talk about a nice touch, of course the card enclosed asked that we keep them in mind for our next trip back to the Caribbean. Oh we will! In fact my wife is begging to go back to Grand Cayman and I must say that with the crummy weather I would love to go back right now, our trip to the Cayman Islands was the best Caribbean vacation ever!

For those who like Ocho Rios, the Grande Riviera presents a more casual and affordable option to the opulent Royal Plantation, also located in Ocho Rios. With the lush green hills as a backdrop to the crystal clear turquoise water and white sand beach, the setting for the Grande riviera couldn't be more perfect.

As the name implies this is not only a great beach resort but also a golf resort. Sandals has recently invested 60 million dollars in upgrading this resort to bring it up to a more modern level of luxury as is expected at Sandals.

The Beach Club offers private cabanas for luxurious sunbathing, the rooms, suites and cottages have all been completely renovated and furnished with Sandals signature beautiful Mohagony furnishings.

As far as accommodations, you can choose between the Riviera Villas which are on the hillside and offer pleasant views of the Caribbean, or the Riviera Seaside which offers rooms and suites just steps from the beach.

Rates start at $165US per person per night for a Garden of Eden room and go up to the Honeymoon Beachfront suite with butler service for $446US per person per night. Some of the suites come complete with your own private plunge pool, you can spend your days in total privacy if you so choose.

Now Sandals is known for their excellent restaurants and the variety of cuisines, but the Grande Riviera offers 15 restaurants to choose from! No worries about getting tired of the same old food as you can eat every meal at a different restaurant each day.

The Jamaica Golf and Country Club is one of the top rated golf courses in the entire Caribbean according to Golf Digest. The course is woven into the lush green Jamaican hillsides and affords great ocean views. Don't worry about packing your clubs along as you can rent from the pro shop.

All the usual activities are available as well including, snorkeling, skiing, wind surfing and sailing just to name a few. Scuba is included with your stay at the Grande Riviera and there are also private golf lessons available, and the higher end suites also include a free Dunn's River Falls catamaran cruise. With a mile long beach of powdery white sand, this is probably the most picturesque resort in the Sandals chain. If you have read my ranking of Sandals resorts based on reviews, you know this resort is right in the middle of the pack.

Rooms start with the Grande Deluxe room at $218US per person per night and go up to the Ultra Grande Luxe Beachfront Rondoval Suite with Private Plunge Pool and Whirlpool at $674US per person per night. Sandals Halcyon Beach resort in St. Lucia is the 7th rated resort based on my rankings of the 13 Sandals resorts. So Sandals Halcyon is right smack dab in the middle of the pack, not one of the top rated Sandals hotels and not one of the lowest rated.

St. Lucia is a beautiful Caribbean island of the Lesser Antilles on the southeast corner of the Caribbean Sea. Known for its amazing volcanic rock formations which climb as high as 3000 feet, St. Lucia is one of the best Caribbean vacation destinations, especially popular with destination weddings and honeymoons.

Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort is one of 3 Sandals resorts on the island of Saint Lucia, the others being the Regency La Toc and the Grande St. Lucian. The Halcyon Beach Resort is set beautifully among the lush tropical vegetation, with low rise cottages that are nestled amidst the trees to give you that real "getting away from it all" feeling.

The most notable feature of this hotel is The Pier restaurant which is on a pier 130 feet out on the water where you and your loved one can enjoy a delicious fresh seafood dinner.

As I mentioned they offer a Dine Around program where you can eat at any of the 21 restaurants among the 3 St. Lucia Sandals properties. They also have a Stay at 1 Play At 3 program where you can avail yourself of the incredible number of activities that Sandals is famous for at each of the 3 resorts.

This means you can enjoy 11 pools, 11 whirlpools and 23 bars. 23 bars at 3 resorts? Do you get the feeling that drinking is a big part of staying at Sandals?

There is of course a myriad of activities to do including kayaking, sailing, wind surfing, snorkeling, water skiing, volleyball, squash and shuffleboard. In the evenings there's live shows, live bands, karaoke bars and piano bars.

As with the other Grand resorts, the Grand Bavaro has the look and feel of an exotic palace, the architecture is stunning. This hotel has 260 suites, 13 Ocean Front Grand Suites and 1 Presidential Suite. All the suites are luxuriously furnished and you can choose between a pool view room or an ocean view room. The bathrooms are marble and come complete with jetted tubs. Flat screen televisions and fully stocked mini bars are standard.

The Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso in Mexico's Riviera Maya near Cancun was awarded Trip Advisor's 2011 Traveler's Choice Award as the top all inclusive resort in the world based on reviews and is on the list of top 10 all inclusive resorts in Cancun.

Iberostar's Grand Hotel Paraiso is part of Iberostar's "Grand" collection of hotels. These are incredible 5 star luxury resorts. There are three Grand hotels, the others being the Grand Hotel Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica and the Grand Hotel Bavaro in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

The Grand Hotel Paraiso is a stunning resort that looks like an exotic palatial palace. The resort is located just 20 minutes from Playa Del Carmen on a beautiful white sand beach with turquoise water. The grounds are lush and tropical as would be expected, with an expansive pool, four whirlpools and swim up bar.

The Grand Hotel Paraiso has 300 suites and 10 villas. These suites come complete with a jetted tub, a sitting area and dining area and fully stocked minibar. If the budget allows, there are Presidential suites that provide more room and of course more luxury. Each of the 10 villas have separated rooms to host the whole family and come with a small private pool.

While I have to say on my rankings there were actually 4 resorts that based on reviews narrowly edged out the Grand Hotel Paraiso, either way this is an amazing resort. This hotel looks like a palace for a King, it is just plain stunning! With the amazing style and architecture along with being waited on by your personal butler, you will feel like royalty. The Grand Hotel Paraiso has four a la carte restaurants and themed restaurants serving Japanese and Italian cuisine.

The beauty of the Iberostar Grand hotels is that they are adults only. If you want to get away from the kids or plan a wedding or honeymoon, these Grand hotels will pamper you in luxury and enable you to relax and unwind like nothing else.

If you have read my rankings of the Sandals resorts based on reviews, you would see that the Sandals Whitehouse hotel is one of the highest rated hotels in the Sandals chain, only the Royal Plantation is rated higher. But you have to remember that the Royal Plantation is a boutique all suite hotel where each suite comes with a butler, how can you top that?

Sandals Whitehouse is unique in that it is set in a rather secluded setting, far from the crowded resort areas. Whereas most hotels set side by side up and down the best beaches, Sandals Whitehouse has a spectacular 2 mile beach all to itself! The property is nestled on a 500 acre wilderness preserve which means there is nothing else around for miles, talk about getting away from it all. This a a resort to go to if you want to thoroughly decompress from your busy life. If you need to have some city with nightclubs and shopping, Whitehouse may not be for you.

Cayman Islands - Best Vacation Ever!

Well, my wife and I just returned from our trip to the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman in particular, celebrating our 20th anniversary. We both agreed that it was our best vacation ever! Grand Cayman and 7 Mile Beach are a Caribbean dream!

With Trip Advisor ranking the Cayman Islands as the very best Caribbean destination I had to go on a fact finding mission to see if it was all that it was made out to be.....it was.

While I am typically writing about hotels and all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, we decided to get off the beaten path with a condo at a small property of only 16 units in a secluded stretch on the northern end of 7 Mile Beach, right on the beach. When I say right on the beach, I mean you step from the patio of our ground floor room, right onto the sand about 100 feet from the water! You just can't get closer to the water than that, it was incredible! There's just something special about being able to step out your door right onto one of the best, most beautiful beaches in the world.

Our room was in a property about 20 years old but completely updated recently with a beautiful kitchen and bath with travertine throughout. With most of the units owner-occupied there was hardly a soul around the entire 12 days we were there. In Fact, amazingly we had the entire beach to ourselves most every day! We couldn't believe it! Often we would look up and down the beach and not see another person in sight.

Now 7 Mile Beach is regularly rated one of the top beaches in the world, the stretch in front of our room was crystal clear and shallow (chest deep) for about 50 feet out. Beyond that it was only about 7-8 feet deep for another 100 yards or so. The sand was white and powdery soft. The snorkeling was great right in front of our room, we saw several sting rays and swam with a sea turtle every time we went out, of course there were plenty of beautiful tropical fish to see too! By far Grand Cayman was the best snorkeling I have ever done in the Caribbean or Hawaii. A short walk up the beach was Cemetery Beach which had some great coral with tons of fish to see as well.

Our property was unique in that is was away from the more congested part of 7 Mile Beach and on each side of our property was undeveloped areas which gave you the feeling you were in a remote area and had the beach all to yourself. Very secluded, very quiet. My wife and I aren't the type who want a lot of people around and enjoy our privacy so it was a dream come true for us.

Now as you know the heat and intense sun in the Caribbean can be brutal especially if you are traveling there without a good dark tan to start with, you will fry. So a place with ample shade was important, we wanted palm trees and vegetation shade so we wouldn't have to fight for an umbrella every day. This condo was perfect in that there were several large trees for us to sit under to stay out of the direct sun, we still got a little burned.

One great thing about having your room just steps away is you can get whatever you want, whenever you want, if you want a snack, fix a sandwich or a cold drink, it's right there. This is huge when you are at the beach, it's convenient and you save a lot of money.

We did eat out for dinner to try out some of the local restaurants, and here Grand Cayman again sets itself apart from many other Caribbean destinations. This tiny island has over 200 restaurants to choose from! Any type of cuisine or location you could want is available. One of the neighbors in our condo complex was the owner of Agua which is a restaurant nearby. We tried out a different restaurant each time we went out. Margaritaville, Breezes, Deckers, Macabuka, The Warf, Sunset House to name a few were very good. In my opinion, the Warf was the best meal we had and also the most expensive, our dinner was $145 US. For the money my wife and I both agreed that Breezes was our favorite. The Jerk chicken cobb salad was great, we even got it to take out and brought it back to our place to eat it on the beach, delicious!

One nice feature we observed about the Cayman locals is that they are very friendly toward tourists. Unlike some other Caribbean islands we have visited where the service in the restaurants is horrible and they act put out to have to serve you knowing they are getting their tip regardless, the service everywhere we went was refreshingly very good.

If you are coming from the U.S. expect the prices to eat out to be about double what you'd pay on the mainland. There is no sales tax in the Cayman Islands but the food prices are much higher and 15% gratuity is included. We bought coffee, rolls, fruit and sandwich supplies so we could eat breakfast and lunch at our room and save money, we figured we saved a few hundred dollars by doing this, plus we got to eat on the beach which is where we wanted to spend most of our time anyway.

With the standard of living in the Cayman Islands being among the highest in the Caribbean, everything was clean, modern, efficient and well maintained. The island has an overall clean and safe feel to it. We were never once approached by anyone trying to push a product or service on us, not one beach vendor.

I had heard from a friend who visited the Cayman Islands in the 1970's that the mosquitoes were terrible there so I was a little concerned about being attacked. Well, we sat on the beach after dark the first few nights and didn't have any mosquito bites. However, for some strange reason the last few nights we were there, the mosquitoes swarmed us soon as the sun set, so we decided sunset was a good time to get ready to go out for dinner which worked out fine. Being that our location was surrounded by woods, I suspect that to be the reason for the mosquitoes because in the town and more developed areas we ate dinner alfresco every night and there weren't any mosquitoes.

We visited Rum Point but weren't impressed. Having a room right on a semi-private beach was way more appealing than hanging out in a crowded beach. I could see if you lived on the island and had no beach at home that Rum Point might be a fun destination. We considered renting a Sea-Doo, but I have ridden them in the past and after about 15 minutes they seem rather boring and over priced.

We were on Grand Cayman in August which is their "rainy season" all I can say is I wish our rainy season was like theirs. During the 12 days we were there, 10 days were beautiful, sunny and hot, we had brief showers on only 2 days and were followed by sunshine which soon dried everything up like it hadn't even rained. Now when I say it was hot, I mean HOT! It was around 90 degrees every day with about 80% humidity which put the heat index (what it feels like) at around 104 degrees! When you are at the beach it is just perfect, but if you are walking around town or something it's brutal.

As I said my wife and I both agreed that this was the best vacation we had ever had, I honestly think it was about as perfect of a Caribbean vacation as you can possibly get! The island, the people, the accommodations, the location, the beach, the weather, the food, the snorkeling, the water, the sand, it was all great! And of course very romantic, we are already planning our next trip back to the Cayman Islands!

Caneel Bay is a fabulous hotel located on a secluded cove, you'll feel like you have the whole island to yourself. You actually can check into the hotel on the ferry boat from Redhook on St. Thomas, so there's no need to go to the front desk, just go right to your room once you arrive. (I have a photo of Caneel Bay at the top of this post)

Caneel Bay is a Rosewood Resort which also operates the Rosewood Little Dix Bay, which is a top rated resort on the British Virgin Island of Virgin Gorda. Rosewood knows how to run a top-notch 5 star resort. They also operate Jumby Bay in Antigua and Tucker's Point in Bermuda among others.

Gallows Point is a beautiful resort as well but is built on a rocky point, not so much of a beach resort as Caneel Bay which has an amazing beach all to itself.

Here is the rankings of the top 5 best resorts in the British Virgin Islands. These are some of the most spectacular resorts in the British Virgin Islands, and for that matter, the entire Caribbean.

The British Virgin Islands are part of the United Kingdom and known as the sailing capitol of the Caribbean Islands. They lie east of the U.S. Virgin Islands ( I have ranked the top 10 resorts in St. Thomas here). There is an amazing assortment of islands to sail around, the scenery is awesome and always changing. There are hundreds of secluded coves and beaches to have all to yourself, your own little slice of paradise.

The two main islands in the British Virgin Islands are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Most of the best resorts are on Virgin Gorda. Although, there's always Neckar Island, Richard Branson's private island you can rent for a mere $53,000USD per night.

Awhile back the Travel Channel did a show on the best beach resorts in the Caribbean and Rosewood Little Dix Bay was one of their top 10 best beach resorts in the Caribbean. For a quiet secluded resort to get away from it all, Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda is pretty tough to beat!

The British Virgin Islands are also home to Pusser's Pub. I'll never forget some great times at Pusser's Pub in the Bahamas on my honeymoon, in fact I still have Pusser's glasses as souvenirs 20 years later....ahhhh Good times. If you visit Tortola you gotta stop in to Pusser's Pub.

The Turks and Caicos islands may not be as famous as some of the more popular Caribbean vacation destinations such as Jamaica or the Virgin Islands. The Turks and Caicos are a sparsely populated archipelago located just south of the Bahamas and north of the Dominican Republic. Most of the population is centered on the island of Providenciales which has a town by the same name.

Grace Bay is located on the north shore and was recently named the best beach vacation destination in the world by Trip Advisor. Grace Bay has a spectacular beach of powdery white sand and crystal clear blue water. The town of Providenciales is a quiet town with not much to see or do and shuts down early in the evenings. This is a destination for those wanting a quiet, tranquil holiday and don't need nightlife or a lot of activities to keep entertained.

The drawback of resorts on Grace bay is that they are mostly set back behind some sand dunes so unless your room is on the upper floor you won't likely get a good view of the ocean. Also, unlike some beach resorts where you are just stepping out your patio door to the water, the resorts tend to extend away from the beach, so you won't likely have that right on the water feel.

Well, the clear winner as the best all inclusive resort in St. Lucia is East Winds Inn, which also made it into the top 10 all inclusive resorts in the entire Caribbean. The East Winds is a smaller boutique resort with only 30 rooms and as often is the case, provides that extra special intimate feel with a great staff to guest ratio. Jade Mountain also made the Caribbean top 10 list, but keep in mind it isn't a beach resort, it's in the hills.

The Sandals resorts aren't in the top end boutique category but as a larger resort have more to offer in the way of activities, so there is a bit of a trade off.

Best BEACHES Resort - Based on Reviews

The best Beaches resort is something you might like to know if you are planning to take the family on an all inclusive vacation to the Caribbean. Beaches resorts are probably the most well known name when it comes to family all inclusive Caribbean holidays.

Beaches is owned by Sandals Resorts who have been in the Caribbean all inclusive business for over 25 years now. While most of the highest rated Caribbean resorts are for adults only, Beaches resorts are certainly an excellent way to go when taking the whole family along. Beaches has four resorts in the Caribbean, 2 in Negril, Jamaica, 1 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and 1 in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Beaches resorts have just about every conceivable entertainment for kids that you could think of. They have a Kids Camp where they can hang out with some Sesame Street characters. For teens they have xbox 360 Kinect, water slides, lazy rivers, swim up soda bars, surf simulators and of course plenty of swimming pools.
